Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is also known as ‘EEG Biofeedback’ (where EEG refers to electroencephalography) or ‘Brain Training’ and is considered as an effective and natural technique to improve performance and overall well-being. With Neurofeedback sophisticated computer technology is used to improve brain regulation, the ability of the brain to operate as we want it to and as appropriate in particular circumstances. When our brain becomes deregulated it is like a car miss-firing – performance is limited.  By improving brain regulation, we can resolve any regulation problems and also ‘tune-up’ the brain to work better and faster.

How Neurofeedback Works

With Neurofeedback the brain is trained to self-regulate again, by using the brain’s own capacity for change to reshape brain pathways. It is a way to directly train the brain to function better, resulting in improvements regarding business, sports and personal performance as well as various mental and physiological issues.

The technology and underlying mechanism of Neurofeedback are complex, however, the process is straight forward, painless, and non-invasive. It is just learning. Brain activity is learned to altered the same way every other skill is learned. People learn through feedback and practice and with Neurofeedback the learning process will be guided by a form of feedback that was previously not available.

During a Neurofeedback session instantaneous information or feedback about changes in ones brain’s electrical activity is provided. This information is for example provided in video games (‘a car would go slower or faster’) or videos (‘the screen bigger or smaller’), that respond to the brain activity. And every half second, the brain activity is compared to ones target or goal for change. A signal and “reward” is given when meeting the goal. No signal or reward when not.

Neurofeedback in Practice

During a Neurofeedback session, brain activity is measured by observing tiny electrical signals (brain waves) to assess how the brain is performing. The technical name for this is electroencephalography, or EEG.

Neurofeedback - Performance training

Sophisticated computer technology assesses these raw brainwaves and the data is used to provide direct feedback to the brain on how it is performing, using video, audio and tactile software.

When a goal is met and the brain is working well (as measured by the EEG), the technology causes the video to go faster, louder or bigger. As one relaxes, the brain ‘tunes in’ to this feedback and adjusts in response. It is this positive reinforcement in the form of sensory feedback that trains the brain to correct any irregular behaviour it may have been experiencing.

The good news is this all happens subconsciously – one just needs to relax and let the brain use its own ability to self-regulate.

Neurofeedback at Neurofeedback4Performance

The overall goal at Neurofeedback4Performance is to improve ones performance and self development by increasing emotional and physiological self-regulation and stability. With this main goal in mind we develop a Personal Training Plan, based on experienced limitations and desired improvements in performance and/or development. Individual specific information will tell us which areas (i.e. parietal, temporal, pre-frontal) should be targeted and how we should train these areas to enhance improvement.

At Neurofeedback4Performance there are two training options: Infra Low and Alpha-Theta Neurofeedback.
